Useful Tips for SEO Friendly Web Design

The whole point of designing a high quality website is to create an online presence. The primary purpose the website serves is to help people find your business, learn more about your services and/or purchase your products. The websites are designed with real people in mind and made to target them in order to convert them form visitors to customers.

So how do we visitors end up on your website in the first place? – there are so many ways people find you online from social media shares, to direct website references visual Ads and even business cards, but a large majority of them would be looking for your services or products using a search engine. The most popular of them all being Google – hence why they dictate most of the rules in the world of SEO.

So when building a new business website, it’s important to take into consideration the value of SEO and build a website that is  search engine friendly or SEO friendly. Below we discuss some tips to creating an SEO friendly website:

  • Clean code: It is important to understand how search engine crawlers work and the fact they only crawl your website in HTML. This means that minifying CSS and JavaScript used as well as implementing them correctly is important, since otherwise they can cause the search engine crawlers to skip parts of your website that could be important.
  • SEO friendly page URLs: This tip pretty much explains itself – If a person can easily read and understand your URL, the same goes for search engine crawlers. Making use of page names that are relevant to its content as well as a good URL structure is necessary in order to obtain a better SEO result. Search engines crawl through URL names, Content, Linking and general theme of the website to determine its search rank.

  • Fresh content ready design: Content is the King of it all – the whole purpose of Google’s search rank algorithms are to determine how relevant a website is to a user’s search in order to show it. So this means that content plays a vital role, as your content is what people are looking for. Google says the fresh and regularly updated content is necessary for SEO, so your website design should support this by having a layout ready for fresh content. This could range from anything like a small new updates section or a comprehensive blog with weekly posts. Meta-tags for each page must also be updated and made unique.

  • Avoid use of frames: Using iFrames is a great way for web designers to build and organize separate content within a page. An iFrame allows a web designer to include multiple URLs within a page as each iFrame has its own URL (and hence a separate file).
This can be a problem for SEO as it can block search engine crawlers from reading and indexing certain content contained within the iFrames. Although there are alternative solutions like including the iFrames in robots.txt or making use of search console so that the Google crawlers actually read them, it’s is recommended to avoid using them at all for best SEO.

  • Reduce load speeds: The more time a web page takes to load the more likely a visitor is going to abandon it. This also means that Google is going to recognize that your webpage is taking long to give a user what they are looking for and hence will penalize your rankings. Google has a very useful tool called PageSpeed Insights, which allows you to analyse your webpage load speeds and give you suggestions to improve it.
