Tips to building and SEO friendly Website

Websites have become an integral part of business and is the foundation of building a strong online presence. They are essentially a way of providing your target market with information about your business products and/or services, while also providing them with the options of making purchases online. Your customers can now learn about and purchase those products and services while on the move or from the comfort of their homes.

Although the website user interface and content must take the visitor into careful consideration in order to give them the best possible browsing experience, it is also important to consider how search engines will rank and index the website. People look for and find things online using search engines, so in order to be found your website must be search engine friendly.

Below we discuss some tips to consider when building a website in order to make it SEO friendly:

  • Clean Code: Search engine crawlers only crawl through HTML, it is important to make your code clean, since CSS and JavaScript can result in the crawlers skipping important content and sections of your website. Try to avoid using above the fold CSS and unnecessary JavaScript.

  • Content Ready: Fresh content and keyword relevance is very important when it comes to SEO. After the initial set of optimizations to your website, it is the fresh content, internal linking and keyword content that continue to keep your SEO strategy effective. The website design must be ready to publish fresh content with ease – this could mean setting up a CMS and blog page to make regular posts when the website is up and running.

  • SEO Friendly URLs and Page File Names: Search engine crawlers can read file names and website URLs to help identify what the page is about. Due to this reason it can help with SEO to use relevant keywords where appropriate within your file names. For instance instead of having a page called html you can have web-design-services.html this way the crawlers will be able to identify the keywords, which can in turn improve your page rank. Avoid using underscores and excessively long filenames or URLs too.

  • Improve Load Speeds: The longer your webpage takes to load the higher the chances of a visitor dropping-off (abandoning the webpage). Google provides tools using which you can assess your websites load speeds (for both the desktop and mobile versions separately) then make the necessary updates to improve them. This includes things like optimizing images for the web, minifying JavaScript and in page CSS.

  • Internal Linking: A part of improving the user experience is creating internal links that make it easier for a user to find related content and click through to it. In addition to its effect on user experience, internal linking also has a positive impact on SEO – using what is known as ‘Anchor Text’ within your content you can set up links back to the another page within your site relating to that specific content. (Anchor text is essentially keywords that relate to other pages on your site).

  • Mobile Friendly: Mobile search is becoming the most popular form of online search with the surge in smart phone use and readily available internet on the go. This means that search engines like Google are now serving more results to users on mobile devices; hence want the websites to have support for these devices. Google recommends a responsive web design, one that will serve the same HTML code but respond or adjust itself to the user’s device screen size. A mobile responsive web design has now become an essential part of SEO.
