Why You Need A Mobile Responsive Website

Today mobile devices have a significant presence in our lives, with them impacting almost everything we do in some way or another. Whether it’s to make a simple internet search, to make an online purchase or restaurant booking and even to just find out more about what’s around you – the mobile device would have a small role to play. Having a responsive website design is not something that’s optional for companies to have, as a majority of visitors to your website are most likely viewing it on a mobile device.

In addition to providing your customers and potential customers with a high quality website that they can view on any device, a responsive website design also provides many other advantages to a business including various cost benefits. Some of these advantages are discussed below.

  • Save time and money: Traditionally a separate mobile website would be developed and any mobile users would be re-directed to this standalone device specific site. This essentially meant running two or more separate sites that are displayed to the visitor depending on the device they are using. As a result the cost of testing, support and maintenance would be higher as separate entities will have to be managed. A responsive design on the other hand means that one website responds to the device it is being viewed on and adjusts itself in order to provide an optimal user experience. Hence only the cost of developing and managing one website will need to be considered.

  • Increase your reach to new audiences: With the larger number of internet users on mobile devices, setting up a responsive website means that you can reach more people as mobile users are able to view your website regardless of the device they view it on. The more people you can reach in order to market your business or brand means improved lead generation.

  • Increase conversion rates and sales: Another benefit of the responsive design is that consistency is maintained throughout all the devices. As a result it can impact conversion rates and sales as people are able to use a familiar navigation and site structure on all their devices. Research shows that although people may start browsing for something on one device they may actually finish the buying or contact process on another.

  • Improve Search Engine Visibility and SEO: The most popular search engine, Google gives responsive design significant value over all other alternatives. In addition to this, the fact that responsive designs have the same URL and source-code/content regardless of the device makes it easier and more efficient for Google to crawl and index the website.

It’s an absolute necessity for any business with an online presence to have a mobile responsive website, it can directly impact the success of your website and ultimately affect your bottom line, as a responsive website can contribute to improved leads and sales.

AIMIA the digital industry association in Australia had conducted a study that looked at the behaviour and preferences of Australian smartphone and tablet users. The study concluded that 89% of adult Australians owned a smartphone and 60% owned a tablet. The study also stated that of those who didn’t own a smartphone about 30% plan on purchasing one within the next 12 months. This shows the degree to which mobile devices are being used in Australia and further stresses the importance of having a mobile responsive website. The details of the study can be viewed here
